Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent and reduce violent conflict and promote cooperative approaches to security. It works with a broad range of stakeholders to encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy development and through supporting the actions of others. The Middle East and North Africa Programme (MENA) currently focuses on Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

The Head of MENA will lead on management, implementation and development of the programme in the region. S/he will contribute to Saferworld’s organisational learning and strategy development as a member of the Organisational Management Team. The position is responsible for promoting cooperative approaches to conflict prevention and security in the region.

We are looking for someone who can provide in-depth knowledge of the region coupled with experience of working on conflict prevention and reduction including demonstrable experience of working on gender, peace and security issues. The ideal candidate will have a relevant Masters’ degree and a proven ability to undertake and lead on strategic planning, programme development and organisational learning with a minimum of 5-7 years’ senior management experience. The GIZ office in Cairo is searching a professional to be contracted full time for e period until 31.12.2013 supporting the implementation of both projects in Egypt.

The Project Management Senior Professional is, under the guidance of the head of commission, responsible for
managing an area of responsibility that forms part of the programme objectives, team agreements and/or agreements with the superior
assisting project/programme initiatives to provide professional advisory services to and cooperate with a broad range of target groups
innovation and knowledge management

The Project management senior professional performs the following tasks:

A. Tasks
1. Advising the partner institution(s)
The advisor
assists and monitors the development and implementation of project/programme plans and activities in close consultation with counterparts
contributes to preparing and implementing the coordination process, joint project/programme activities and work at the regional level
deals with the design, preparation and implementation of workshops, seminars and other events on issues connected with the project/programme’s area of activity
develops and organises quality assurance measures and suggests necessary changes, improvements and initiatives

2. Networking and cooperation

supports cooperation, regular contact and dialogue with partners, assists with PR work and cooperates with local communities, relevant organisations, non-governmental agencies and individuals in the project/programme environment and with other projects to improve and maintain good working relationships
communicates local interests and efforts, forwards these and encourages sharing ideas and information for the benefit of the project/programme

3. Knowledge management
The advisor
ensures knowledge transfer to project/programme information
develops ready-to-use strategies and technical concepts, including guidelines, manuals and procedures
draws up reports and presentation documents
prepares appropriate input for various project/programme reports including annual reports, and contributes to the other reports required by the programme manager and GIZ Head Office
assists with research activities and studies on political issues which benefit joint programmes.

4. Coordination tasks

assists with general project planning and develops project concepts including preparation, organisation and moderation of planning exercises and their implementation, management, monitoring, quality management, evaluation, communication and documentation
coordinates relevant project activities at local level in consultation with the manager and in cooperation with the partners, both as regards implementation and preparing organisational aspects
compiles the relevant information for joint activities and assignments
handles order management on behalf of GIZ (e.g. offer preparation, impact monitoring, project progress review, reporting)

B. Required qualifications, competences and experience
masters/MSc in an area that is related to the project/programme objectives, with a focus on a relevant field

Professional experience
at least 5 years’ professional experience in a comparable position

Other knowledge, additional competences
very good working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, phone, fax, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
fluent written and oral knowledge of Arabic ans the European language widely used in the country and a working knowledge of German
willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management.

MDI Egypt Project Coordinator Job Description

POSITION: Egypt Project Coordinator

TERM: 12 Months (subject to 3 month probationary period) renewable contract subject to performance and funding

RESPONSIBLE TO: MDI Country Programme Director, Cairo

General Purpose of the Position

The purpose of the position is to provide administration, financial and technical support to the different component of the ‘Rebuilding Post-Revolution Egyptian Media: Embracing Free Expression, Diversity and Inclusiveness’ project. The project coordinator will handle different tasks in coordination with the Country Programme Director. This entitles performing several duties as detailed below.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• To organise project activities as assigned by and in collaboration with the Country Programme Director and local partner organisations, ensuring the effective implementation of the project;
• To be completely familiar with all planned activities, activity budgets, events and publications outlined in the project application;
• To organise the missions of all consultants and trainers working in Egypt on behalf of MDI;
• To be responsible for liaison between MDI and its formal project partners and / or activity partners as instructed by the Country Programme Director;
• To provide relevant information to the Country Programme Director as related to MDI monthly narrative and financial reports on expenditure, bank reconciliation and projected income needs;
• To produce all project information and materials and to pass them for the English the MDI Arabic websites in an accurate and timely fashion;
• Under the supervision and in collaboration with the Country Programme Director to organized the following activities as envisaged by the SIDA Contract:

Media Industry
1. Diversity Observatory: Conduct media monitoring
2. Inclusive Media for Inclusive Society conferences and IJ Award.
3. Three Inclusive Journalism Production Workshops for young print journalists and production of 60 articles to be published in Egyptian papers.
4. Training, Production and broadcasting of twelve 30-mins ‘Nationwide’ TV programmes.
5. Training, production and broadcasting of 240 audio diaries for ‘Egypt Speaks’ Radio Show.
6. Inclusive Soap Opera Seminar.
Journalism Education Industry
Inclusion of Reporting Diversity Curricula in Higher Education: workshops, mentoring, Scholarships.
Civil Society
Media Relations Advocacy Workshops for CSOs; On-site Consultancy.

• To assist with the English and Arabic-language output and communications of the project by providing translation as required;
• To encourage and oversee the dissemination of project-generated outputs in both the local and international media;
• To collect all articles and reports, both printed and electronic on the project;
• To assist the Country Programme Director in providing project reports to the SIDA as required;
• To provide other assistance to the MDI Cairo team as may be required in support of the project.
