“In the Shadow of a Man” is a documentary that follows the lives of four Egyptian women: Wafaa, Badreya, Suzanne and Shahinda. They share their their stories and their fight for the future as women in post-revolutionary Egypt. The film highlights experiences of love and resistance, of marriage and divorce and of what freedom means for women.
Hanan Abdalla is a freelance British-Egyptian documentary filmmaker who has been in Egypt since the revolution in 2011. “In the Shadow of a Man” was her first film, for which she was awarded Best Documentary Filmmaker at the Doha Tribecca Film Festival. She works with the media collective “Mosireen” in Cairo and is currently working on a documentary about women who were candidates in Egypt’s first parliamentary election after the fall of Mubarak.

Entrance is by invitation only as there are a limited number of seats. Invitations are free and will be available at the Heya booth starting Wednesday, April 17th between 10 am and 5 pm.
